A Clay alternative for teams that want to own the code
Clay vs Claude Code, side by side
| Topic | Clay | Code written with Claude Code |
|---|---|---|
| Where the logic lives | In Clay tables and workflows | In a repo you own |
| Cost model | A plan fee plus actions and data credits. Free plan $0. Launch from $185 and Growth from $495 a month on monthly billing, and both scale with usage. Enterprise is custom. | Hosting, plus each vendor API you call, plus LLM tokens |
| Data sources | Many providers built in, in one waterfall | Any vendor with an API. You sign up to each one |
| Who can edit it | Ops and sales people who know Clay | Anyone who can read code, with Claude Code to help |
| Tests and logs | Run history inside Clay | Tests and a cost log in the repo |
| If you stop paying | Paid features stop. The Free plan allows 500 actions a month and 200 rows a table. | The code still runs. You pay only the vendors |

Choose Clay when speed and team skills come first
- Your team already works in Clay and wants to edit the flow.
- You need a one-off list or a test this week.
- You want many data providers in one waterfall without a contract with each.
Choose code when volume and ownership come first
- The job runs every day across many accounts, so per-action fees add up.
- You need tests, a cost log and an undo path for CRM writes.
- You want the system to keep running with no platform subscription.
- Your future in-house GTM engineer should inherit a normal repo.
Other Clay alternatives
Code is one Clay alternative. These tools are others. Each one fits a different team.

Read what practitioners say
Practitioners disagree. One writer describes moving the orchestration and reasoning layer of his GTM workflow from Clay to Claude Code. Another practitioner says few teams yet run end-to-end agent workflows in production.
Our view: use each where it wins, and keep the logic you depend on in a place you own.

Is code cheaper than Clay?
If you look for a cheaper Clay, the answer depends on volume. For low volume, Clay's own plans are hard to beat. For daily jobs at volume, code that calls vendors direct can cost less, and you own it. The diagnostic gives you a cost model for both.
